This movie is a typical Punjabi laughter riot. Director Prabhu Deva's Bollywood movie "Singh Is Bliing" (SIB) starring Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson, has garnered mixed reviews from the audience across the globe. Singh Is Bliing is enjoyable in parts but as a whole it is not up-to the mark. What works for the film are the scenes with Lara, Akshay and Amy. The whole Mind Your Language and Lost in Translation moments between these three provide ample comic relief. Overall, the Prabhu Deva film lacks the bling we were expecting as a commercial potboiler. If the Prabhu Deva style humor interests your taste buds, you could enjoy Singh Is Bliing.

Did you just ask what’s the film’s story. Singh Is Bliing has absolutely no story to offer. Instead, what it has in plenty are some stale jokes and moronic background sound effects. Things go so unplanned in the film that when Prabhudheva arrives on the screen in a pissing scene, it actually works as a metaphor. Any self respecting viewer would feel the stink.  Akshay Kumar, who has a great comic timing otherwise, has been reduced to a mere loud-mouth. Most of his jokes fall flat. His dialogues are so predictable that you complete them even before he starts the sentence. Still, he is the most tolerable among all the actors, but clearly that’s not enough. Amy Jackson is just a pretty face doing rounds in bikini. It’s better to not say anything about Kay Kay and Lara Dutta. Everytime Kay Kay’s character says, ‘I am too good,’ you cringe. The role itself was badly written, and he makes it even worse. He can give newcomers a lesson in overacting. Lara Dutta would also not like to remember Singh Is Bliing for long. Prabhudheva’s Singh Is Bliing is a tiring, immature and half-hearted attempt at filmmaking. Devoid of story, characterisation and plots, this is torture in the name of comedy. Singh Is Bliing is absolutely unfunny. I felt bad for the guy who asked me at the end of the film, “Why does Akshay Kumar wear folded trouser in one leg?” Poor guy. As if there’s logic to other things in the film.

Another Prabhu Deva film that operates on the principle that the world is still inhabited by Neanderthals, Singh is Bliing goes all out to redefine cinematic trash. The title itself is a dead giveaway. Do not expect any sense, logic or finesse from anything that Singh is Bliing has on offer. What is meant to be a laugh riot is actually a full-fledged endurance test. The comedy is strictly slapstick and the writing is hopelessly clunky. If there is any verbal wit in the film, it is limited to punning on a Hindi word that means hope and also happens to be the English slang for the human posterior. That is how magnificently original and edifying Singh is Bliing is. It is so atrociously bad that even Rowdy Rathore could be passed off as a masterpiece in comparison. In narrative terms, Singh is Bliing is a free for all. One scene follows another without throwing any meaningful light on the previous one or the next. One cow tells another: Yeh insaan bahut zyada bolte hai (Human beings talk too much). But that isn't the problem with Singh is Bliing. What is irretrievably amiss with the film is that nothing it says manages to drift anywhere near some degree of coherence.

‘Singh Is Bliing’ is a low rent comedy and doesn’t care who knows it. Everything about it stoops low: IQ, jokes, scenes. Of course, there is no story, only unconnected, jerky set-pieces. The only thing which saves it—a little — is that it wears its silliness proudly on its hero’s `pug’ ( turban), said hero smartly reworking his good-hearted simpleton who loves his mother and respects his father, and rescues his girl. Akshay Kumar rises somewhat above the risible dialogues and let’s-dump-on-the-audience-with-yet-another-hastily-conceived-set-piece because who-cares-for- a-plot, only because he is able to pull out his ability to be droll and good-natured when things are going south. Yes, he made me laugh a few times. But one goes home wondering: is this all we can get from an Akki film?
