Tumhari Sulu will make you love the simple pleasures

Movie Review: Tumhari Sulu will make you love the simple pleasures

Happy-go-lucky Sulochana (fondly known as Sulu), a suburban Mumbai housewife, lives with her husband, Ashok, a sales manager in a traditional company that sells uniforms, and their 11-year-old son, Pranav. Sulu keeps herself entertained through the day, which includes listening to her favorite radio station and taking part in every possible contest. Sulu breezes through life with a fun and candid never-say-never attitude. On a day like any other, Sulu ends up winning a pressure cooker through a radio contest that she has taken part in. Little does she know that her trip to the radio station is about to change her life. In an unexpected turn of events, she lands a job of an RJ (radio jockey). She is no ordinary RJ for she is made to anchor a night show, which involves chatting with peculiars, strangers and lonely souls.

Tumhari Sulu is the kind of movie 2017 needed. A lighthearted, slice-of-life film, that teaches you to be happy, but not content with your life. Sulu does leave you a little puzzled with her choices at some moments, but, overall, she is pretty good in conveying herself to the audience.

Sulu is a character that anyone can relate to at some point. You could be any gender and any age, Tumhari Sulu will tug at your heartstrings. The movie can be seen trying hard to make you realize what simple pleasures of life you have been ignoring, running behind a bigger plan. Sulu does not ask you to be content with whatever is going in your life, but it does remind you to enjoy every good thing happening parallel to the stress you have.

Sulu is just like your mother was. She will pour out her heart and soul into you, but, when you cross her, she is going to stand her ground, and nothing you do can save you from the consequences of your actions. We see a lot of other strongly written characters as well. The small meaningless conversations, that you expect from the younger generation. The puzzled look that the older generation has when they don’t understand the Millenial lingo, is all placed in the right nooks and corners.

The sprinkling of feminism is so subtle, that it’s pleasant that a director understands it does not need to be in your face.

Shout out to the art director! The sets have been personalized so well, that no level of scrutiny would give you a prop that does not belong to the setting.

Tumhari Sulu is surely a movie that you need to go and watch this Friday.

  • Alia Bhatt is the sweetheart of Bollywood. The actress is friends with everyone in the industry, and the whole film industry loves her. It could be the perks of being the amazing person she seems to be. But, she has many people that do not belong to Bollywood, or her family, that are constantly looking out for her. They are all her best friends, she has attained over her lifetime.
  • Akshay Kumar has been one actor that, even in his 50s, does not look that old. The actor has maintained a physique that no actor of his age has been able to maintain. He is fit, and the whole country takes inspiration from him. But, one thing we forget about the actor is the various looks he has kept throughout his career. So we celebrate the different styles that we have seen the actor in.
  • 2017 might have been a bad year for Bollywood, considering the bad movies, and the scarce Box Office collections that the movies made. Also, the controversies surrounding the movies this year, did them more harm than good. But, there are still a few movies from 2017, that we would watch again someday.
  • We have all heard struggle stories of our favourite celebrities, some have been waiters, and some might have been junior artists. But, too many have been backup dancers. From a field that has potentially more than a million people in it, these stars shone so brightly, that they became the cream of Bollywood. These stars started their journey with dancing behind superstars and are now working with them.
  • Bollywood is filled with people, who excel at acting. But other than acting and the storyline, there is another thing that makes our films blockbusters. Dancing! Bollywood movies are filled with dancers. Some dance like they have two left feet, but some, dance like there is no tomorrow. These are the dancers, we are paying a tribute to today.
  • Madame Tussauds is a gem in the age of modern museums, and the capital has become the lucky holder of this gem. Delhiites have become a part of the lucky few, who can now visit these lifelike celebrity wax statues. But, our favourite part is the amazing resemblance, and in some cases the disparity, of these wax figurines.
