Ranbir Kapoor, who has over the years not only impressed the audience with his acting prowess but has also delivered several hit movies, somehow seems to be losing his touch, and of late nothing seems to be working for this talented actor. His latest release 'Bombay Velvet' also starring Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar, has just managed to collect Rs 22.27 crores at box office (India nett).
Having made his debut in 2007 with a box-office disaster 'Saawariya', Ranbir Kapoor in next six years delivered a number of hit movies like Bachna Ae Haseeno, Wake Up Sid, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Raajneeti, Rockstar, Barfi and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD). Infact, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which released on May 31' 2013, collected Rs 190 crores at the box office (India Nett) and is still amongst the Top 10 highest grossing bollywood movies in India. Ranbir also won Filmfare Best Actor awards for his stupendous performances in Rockstar and Barfi.
After the mega success of YJHD, Ranbir Kapoor's next release was Besharam in Oct' 2013, which generally received negative reviews from critics, and was a box-office flop. In 2014, there was no Ranbir Kapoor movie hitting the theatres, and he was seen playing cameos in Bhootnath Returns and PK. Year 2015 had two releases so far - Roy in Feb 2015 and the recently released Bombay Velvet.
Roy looked promising before its release, but once it hit the theatres it was a complete disaster! Roy was more confusing than the expressions on Arjun Rampal’s face! After these disastrous stints, Ranbir Kapoor was hoping to comeback with a hit. He joined forces with Anurag Kashyap for the period film, Bombay Velvet which failed even miserably at the Box Office.
After analyzing the trend so far, we can easily conclude that Ranbir Kapoor is far from the league of Superstars. He is the heir of perhaps one of the oldest Bollywood family but he lacks any star power. Superstars like Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar manage to get massive openings despite the story line of the movie. Their mere presence in the movie makes sure that the opening day Box Office collection is huge. But Ranbir Kapoor lacks the conviction to draw audience to the theaters even on the first day. His biggest hit was ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ which also starred Deepika Padukone in the lead. Well if we take a closer look, it’s evident that it was Deepika Padukone’s magic that worked for the movie. Even her latest release Piku is doing extremely well. Piku was a much smaller budget movie as compared to Bombay Velvet but still managed to rake in 65.22 crores at box office (India nett) and is still going on strong.
Ranbir Kapoor really needs to pull up his socks and focus on the kind of work he does and most importantly, he needs to be in the news more often for his work than his romantic relationships. Young actors like Varun Dhawan are already getting pretty good reviews and if Ranbir wants to attain the Superstar status, he needs to do something drastic which will change the course of his career graph which is currently not heading upwards!
