Kahaani 2: A captivating story with brilliant performances

Plot

Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Kahaani 2 stars Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles. Kahaani 2 is the sequel to the film Kahaani and Vidya Balan is back as Durga Rani Singh in this instalment. All of us had high expectations from this sequel and we are not disappointed. Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal have given brilliant performances.

Featuring Vidya and Arjun Rampal in key roles, the story of Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh is expected to hit you hard and leave a permanent impact in your head. The story revolves around a woman who rushes to save her daughter after she receives a threatening call. Sujoy Ghosh without wasting anytime draws out attention to the lives of Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) and her daughter, Mini (Naisha Khanna). The mother-daughter duo is living together in small town of Kolkata till the series of incidents start complicating their lives and turns their world upside down. The daughter goes missing and Vidya meets with an accident and that lands her into coma. Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal), the Sub-Inspector is called to investigate this kidnapping case where Durga Rani Singh (Vidya Balan) is a wanted criminal for kidnapping and murdering. Inderjeet finds Vidya’s personal diary and the movie takes a lot of twists and turns from that point. The movie is gripping enough to hold you back on your seats in the first half but very soon you are able to anticipate the whole story in the second half. The movie is a delight to watch because of beautiful cinematography. Sujoy Ghosh flawlessly brings out beauty amidst the towns and lives of towns of India.

Star Performances

Vidya Balan like the earlier instalment fits very well in the character and she delivers exactly what is expected from her. Arjun Rampal does justice to his role as a cop and is assigned with the task of finding Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) who is charged with Kidnapping and murder of a person. This is the best performance of Arjun Rampal so far. Jugal Hansraj fails to mark any impression with his brief character. Had Sujoy Ghosh worked much on his character, he would have been a good character to watch out for in the movie. Sujoy Ghosh gets all the brownie points from us, not only for giving Naisha Khanna her place under the sun, but also for having extracted a superlative performance out of the little girl.

Direction and Screenplay

The story has been placed very intelligently by the director, Sujoy Ghosh, with enough suspense in the first half and much predictable twists in the second half. Sujoy succeeds in crafting yet another intriguing tale insists you on holding your breath for its characters. The screenplay is very well justified with the story and the cinematography is impactful enough to create that much needed suspense and curiousness.

Music

The background score is bit haunting and is bound to give you some chills especially with mysterious dialogue delivery in some scenes. The music is very situational and has been correctly incorporated for a better impact. In short, Clinton Cerejo’s background score is totally on point.

Verdict

On the whole, Kahaani 2 is an excellently executed thriller. A must watch movie especially for the stunning performances delivered by Vidya Balan, Arjun Rampal and for Sujoy Ghosh commendable direction.

Bollypedia Ratings - 3/ 5 stars

  • You fall in love and vow to spend the rest of your life with each other. Such is the beauty of a marriage. The end, however, is not always as beautiful. Blame it on fame, gorgeous looks or the fact that cupid's arrows strike again and again in the glamour world, but Bollywood couples have to face the ugly truth of infidelity, divorces, and break-ups ever so often.
  • In Bollywood, there was a time, when supporting actors did not receive the appreciation they do now. They were looked at as mere pawns to make the lead look good. But times have changed, and talented artists have taken these so called side roles, and evolved them into the backbone of the films. They are now taking the limelight, and sometimes even overshadow the leads.
  • Unlike popular belief, there have been a large number of celebrities who broke the ‘Career is finished after marriage’ taboo and came out shining like true stars only after they got married. Some turned out to be the major superstars of the country, whereas some struggled to leave an impact on the industry, but the one thing that all of them have in common is that they were married before they set their foot on the silver screen.
  • Whenever a celebrity does something whether good or bad, extraordinary or mundane, the news always manages to make its way to the headlines. The frenzy around Indian celebrities who became politicians is therefore justified. And when the theme is women-centric, it’s even better.
