The big releases of Bollywood are weighed as per the length of their stay in the multiplexes, the box office net collection and the innovative story. The year 2016 was a box full of surprises for many movies which made money like hell even in the days of demonetization. Some of those movies triggered emotions, some plotted purely for entertainment; but the inspirational biopics emerged victorious in collecting the highest amount at the box office.
Let’s visit all those movies which managed to cross the 100 Crore finish line in style:
Needless to say, Salman Khan’s befitting performance and his charms made the movie ‘Sultan’ the highest grossing movie of the year. The story is about the love story of a wrestler, who struggled a lot to fight for his dreams. Coupled-up with Anushka’s par excellence act and the intriguing story, the director Ali Abbas Zafar’s movie managed to cross the 300 crore mark in just few days. In totality, Sultan earned Rs. 300.45 crore.
Aamir Khan’s most awaited movie of 2016 was the biopic, ‘Dangal’ which hit the box office with a bang by crossing Rs. 100 crores in just 3 days. The real story of the Indian national wrestler, Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir) who trained his daughters, Geeta and Babita (Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra) to make them India’s most celebrated wrestlers. With the director Nitesh Tiwari’s amazing work, the movie has collected Rs. 238.85 crore (and still counting).
M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story
Directed by Neeraj Pandey, M.S. Dhoni is the biopic based on the life of India’s famous cricketer, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Sushant Singh Rajput’s commendable job in the movie has become one of his best performances so far, and the movie could easily enter into the 100 Crore Club. Although, the film was given missed reviews, but it could manage to earn Rs. 133.04 crore in no time.
Akshay Kumar emerged as one of the finest actors in 2016 with this amazing biopic war film and he is probably the one actor who can give a tough competition to the Khan fraternity. Directed by Raja Krishna Menon, Airlift is about a callous Indian, Ranjit Katyal (Akshay) who takes the responsibility of around 170000 stranded people living in the war zone area of Kuwait. Nimrat Kaur’s effortless acting as Ranjit’s wife was worth watching. Airlift grossed Rs. 128.10 crore.
Another scintillating act by Akshay Kumar was shown in Tinu Suresh Desai’s crime thriller, Rustom. The movie has set a pace for all those movie makers who make a crime film. The story shows the real incident of the Indian Naval Officer Rustom Pavri (Akshay) who loves his country and his gorgeous wife, Cynthia Pavri (Ileana D'Cruz), but eventually finds about Cynthia’s alleged love affair. He is convicted for killing his wife’s lover, Vikram Makhija (Arjan Bajwa). The exceptional movie earned Rs. 127.49 crore.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Director Karan Johar’s romantic drama movie, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil made a grand earning and crossed the 100 Crore Club even after being one of the most controversial movies of 2016. The superb on-screen chemistry of the duo, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, and the intense hotness of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan marked the success of the movie. Everything included, the movie grossed Rs. 112.48 crore.
Directed by Sajid-Farhad, Housefull 3 is a multi starer comedy movie and yet another Akshay Kumar flick. The amazing punch lines and full entertaining scenes gave the movie a push and it jumped up to the 100 Crore Club. It seems, Akshay Kumar really knows how to slay the box office and other leading stars as well. Housefull 3 earned Rs. 109.14 crore.
Ajay Devgn as and in ‘Shivaay’ has left no stone unturned to make this movie grand. Shivaay is a story of a passionate Himalayan mountaineer who becomes a killing machine to save his family from the evil hands. The views in the movie were very breathtaking and the stunts were quite impressive too. Although people had average reviews for the movie, but it could still manage to just cross the 100 crore finish line by a small mark i.e. it earned Rs. 100.33 crore.
