The end of 2016 has just become awe-inspiring with the release of the most awaited movie of the year, ‘Dangal’. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal is a biopic of a determined father, Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) who leaves no page unturned in training his daughters to become a world class wrestler. Mahavir was a wrestler living in Haryana who always wished to see his son getting a gold medal for India in wrestling. But, he and his wife Daya Shobha Kaur (Sakshi Tanwar) could never get a son. Even so, he loved his daughters, Geeta (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra), but never thought that a woman can take part in this male-dominated game. One day when he discovered that his daughters have beaten-up some local guys, Phogat gets determined to train them in wrestling. So, without worrying about the criticism of the society, he became the ‘haanikaarak bapu’ and kept his daughters on their toes. The gripping narration of Dangal shows the beautiful father-daughter relationship and Aamir has delivered this to his perfection.
The strong-stellar story and the stronger delivery by Aamir Khan, Fatima and Sanya gives the movie a sudden boost. Be it Phogat’s fight or the emotional outburst of the girls or the young Geeta, giving tough competition to the male wrestlers, the movie is flawless frame-by-frame. The best thing is that Dangal will keep you amazed throughout the length of 2 hours and 21 minutes with its superb dialogues. Sakshi Tanwar, who plays the mother of Geeta-Babita did a marvelous job and made an impression even with a short role.
It does have some thumbs-down moments. The initial first half had slow pace, especially after the fight scene. Also, some ‘dhobhi-pachar’ wrestling scenes are a bit lengthy which might make you feel like getting over with it.
Undoubtedly, the real hero of the entire film is the director, Nitesh Tiwari. He is the man behind the flawless and emotionally gripping movie. He has stayed true to the story of the wrestler and his family from the initial start of the movie. The movie has some serious goosebump scenes and the script wasn’t even looking like a fiction; every actor was so much in the skin of their characters.
Dangal’s music is composed by Pritam who has completely justified the soundtrack in the movie. The songs like “Haanikaarak Bapu”, “Dhaakad” and “Gilehriyaan” are so fitting for the movie. Also, the lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya are very touching. Not to forget, the ace Punjabi singer, Daler Mehndi has really pumped-up our heart beats with his scintillating voice on the title track.
2016 has witnessed so many biopics, but Dangal has a different air itself. A flawless piece comprising of so many emotions, Dangal seeped so deeply in the Indian ethos what we just can’t miss! So, yes, it’s a worth watch. Make your Christmas weekend more entertaining and enjoyable with the movie. You are in for a treat with Aamir.
