The ‘Jhakaas’ man of Bollywood, Anil Kapoor is an awesome example of the actor who has aged very gracefully and whose looks could still kill.His 40 amazing years in Bollywood speak for himself and his versatility. Not only Bollywood, he is very well known in Hollywood as well with his incredible performance in Danny Boyle’s Oscar winning film, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (2008).
Born on 24th December 1959 in Chembur, Anil Kapoor’s father was the film producer, Surinder Kapoor and his mother, Nirmal (Suchitra) Kapoor was a homemaker. He has three siblings, Boney Kapoor (the eldest), Reena Kapoor (elder sister) and Sanjay Kapoor (youngest brother). He studied in O.L.P.S. (Our Lady of Perpetual Succor) School and thereafter, studied in theSt. Xaviers College from where he was thrown out in the second year because of lack of interest in studies. He always had a flair of acting and wanted to join Bollywood, so he got admitted to the Roshan Taneja's Acting school.
Less people know that Anil Kapoor was only 12 when he made his debut in Bollywood with ‘Tu Payal Mein Geet’, directed by Shashi Kapoor which was never released. In 1979, he appeared in ‘Hamare Tumhare’ in a small role. His lead role was in ‘Vamsa Vruksham’ (1980), a Telugu movie, and was featured in a Kannada film ‘Pallavi Anu Pallavi’ (1984). His first lead role in Bollywood was in ‘Woh7 Din’ (1983), but he was finally recognized from his Tapori look in the movie ‘Mashaal’ (1984) for which he bagged his first ever Filmfare for the Best Supporting Actor. He became an instant hit amongst the youth and a fashion icon too. ‘Yudh’ (1985) had his iconic dialogue “Ek Dum Jhakaas” which is still his hallmark. Anil got the Filmfare Best Actor nomination for the movie ‘Meri Jung’ (1985).
The year 1986 saw him going versatile as an actor with the movies ‘Karma’, ‘Janbaaz’, ‘Insaaf Ki Awaaz’ and ‘Chameli Ki Shaadi’. But, 1987 brought huge luck for him when he played the iconic role as and in Mr. India opposite Sridevi which was the biggest commercial hit of the year. And finally, his growth graph shot up with the super hit movie ‘Tezaab’ (1988) for which he got his first ever Filmfare award for Best Actor. ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989) was yet another blockbuster of the year and Anil Kapoor became the rising superstar. And after that, he started delivering back-to-back hits with the movies like ‘Parinda’, ‘Rakhwala’ and ‘Eeshwar’ in 1989.
During the 1980’s, Anil met a wealthy model, Sunita Bhambhani and immediately fell in love with her. They both got married on 19th May, 1984. The duo has three children, Sonam Kapoor, who is a successful actress, Harshvardhan Kapoor, who recently joined Bollywood and Rhea Kapoor, who is a film producer.
1990 era was like a non-stop snatch parade for Anil Kapoor with movies like ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’, ‘Ghar Ho To Aisa’, ‘Awaargi’ (it was critically acclaimed), but actually 1990-91 was the worst for him because he couldn’t deliver good movies and his ranking dropped down. In the year 1992, he gave his best performance ever in ‘Beta’ opposite Madhuri Dixit and got his second Filmfare Best Actor award. ‘Laadla’ (1994) and ‘1942: A Love Story’ (1994) aresome successful films of his career and he is still remembered for his flawless acting in ‘1942: A Love Story’. In fact, it was the first film ever to be given the rating of ‘U/A’. Amongst a few box office hits were movies like, ‘Deewana Mastana’ (1997), ‘Biwi No.1’ (1999) and ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ (1999).
Anil Kapoor shook the industry with his scintillating performances in ‘Taal’ (1999) as well as ‘Virasat’ (1997). Again he had a slight turmoil in his career with the movies like ‘Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate’ (1998) and ‘Gharwali Baharwali’ (1998) which were average performers.
The year 2000 kick-started with Anil Kapoor’s one of the finest movies ever, ‘Pukar’ which gave him the prestigious National Film Award in the Best Actor category. ‘Humara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’ (2000) was yet another commercial and critical success. Anil Kapoor’s powerful performance in the movie, ‘Nayak’ (2001) is still appreciated amongst us. In the year 2002, he almost became the unbeatable by acting so impeccably in ‘Badhaai Ho Badhaai’ where he became the fat man, ‘Rishtey’, in which his character as a boxer blew-up our mind and ‘Om Jai Jagdish’, where he portrayed amazingly the role of a responsible eldest son, Om. ‘Calcutta Mail’ was also a challenging role for him, but he easily donned the character and gained critics appreciation.The later releases like ‘Musafir’, ‘Bewafaa’, ‘My Wife’s Murder’, ‘No Entry’, ‘Chocolate’, ‘Welcome’, ‘Race’ and ‘Black and White’ saw Kapoor in versatile roles and he ignited the movie screens again and again.
Anil’s first ever project in Hollywood came as a surprise to him when he was offered the role in Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (2008) and it bagged him a lot of appreciation in the international front. The movie gained many international awards like the Oscars and the Golden Globe Award. He then came in the movie, ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ (2010) in a negative role. The year 2010 also gave him the entry into the television serial ‘24’ which had his powerhouse performance and was loved by the viewers in the cop role. He appeared in the movie like ‘Race 2’ and ‘Shootout at Wadala’ and his role was critically appreciated.
Not only acting, Anil Kapoor is also a fine producer. He has produced movies like ‘Badhaai Ho Badhaai’, ‘My Wife’s Murder’, ‘Gandhi, My Father’ (2007), ‘Shortkut: The Con Is On’ and ‘Aisha’ (2010), starring his own daughter Sonam Kapoor. He lent his voice as a singer for the first time in the title track of the comedy movie, ‘Chameli Ki Shaadi’. He also sung "Tere Bina Main Nahin Mere Bina Tu Nahin" (Woh 7 Din), "I Love You" (Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai), "Bhaiyaji ka Tashan" (Tashan) and released a full album by the name of “Welcome” in the year 1986.
He is currently working in the 2017 movie ‘Mubarakan’ and is also working in the sequel to ‘No Entry’. He will also be seen in a Hollywood upcoming film ‘Cities’.
Anil Kapoor has done around 100 films throughout his movie career span of 40 years. We will definitely see this ‘Jhakaas’ actor in many more projects later. His excellent acting skills and poise has always made his fans go Ga-Ga over him and his timeless charm can’t be overlooked.
